1. You may either apply on-line or download a paper application form.
 
    
2. You will need to pay a Non-refundable application fee (the online application fee is HK$300 and the paper application fee is HK$400 for 2010 entry) : 
via ON-LINE payment by either VISA or MASTERCARD (available for ON-LINE Application ONLY), OR
download the Authorisation of credit card payment form and send us the original of the completed and signed form by post, OR
a bank draft or bank cheque (in Hong Kong dollars, drawn on a bank in Hong Kong) made payable to "The Chinese University of Hong Kong" (Please write your name, application number (if already known) and contact number on the back or the bank draft / bank cheque), OR
via ATM machine in Hong Kong at the Hang Seng Bank (account number: 293-005005-010) and send us the original receipt of payment (please write your name and contact number on the back).

THE HONG KONG UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY          
APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION AS AN INTERNATIONAL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT IN 2010        
  GENERAL NOTES 
1 "International Student" Classification 
  1.1 An International Student is classified as someone who does not have: 
  (a) Right of Abode or Right to Land in Hong Kong SAR; or 
  (b) A Dependent Visa that allows entry into Hong Kong SAR; or 
  © Citizenship / Permanent Residency in Chinese Mainland, Macau SAR or Taiwan. 
  1.2 Applicants that have been offered admission into HKUST as an International Student will need to apply for a student visa from the Hong Kong SAR Immigration Department. HKUST will provide assistance in this regard upon offering admission. 
  1.3 Applicants that have been offered admission into HKUST as an International Student will need to pay tuition fees according to the fee schedule for non-local students. 
  
2 Application Deadline 
  2.1 Complete applications submitted on or before 31 December 2009 will be considered for Early Decision. Applications will be accepted until 31 March 2010. 
  2.2 HKUST reserves the right to consider / not consider those applicants whose application forms are submitted after the deadline. 
  
3 Point of Contact for All Application-Related Matters 
  3.1 All application-related matters should be forwarded to the International and Mainland Students and Programs Office (International Students and Programs) as outlined below:

4 Components of a Complete Application 
  4.1 A complete application consists of the following: 
  (a) A properly completed application form; 
  (b) The full application fee; 
  © Supporting documents (including certified true copies of certificates and transcripts and the Confidential Academic Reference). 
  
5 Submission of Application Forms 
  5.1 Applicants may submit only one application for admission to HKUST in any one academic year. (Note that each application allows applicants to state up to 3 choices of programs.) 
  5.2 On-line applications not submitted within 2 weeks from the opening of the application account will be cancelled. In this case, applicants can open a new account (i.e., with a new user name) and fill in a new application. 
  5.3 Application forms received by fax or email will not be considered. 
  
6 Changes to Information Subsequent to Submission of Application 
  6.1 Applicants are advised to report changes to their personal contact information, such as telephone numbers and address, promptly to HKUST by logging onto their on-line application account and making the necessary modifications.  
  6.2 Please note that changes to other information on the application are not normally allowed after submission of the application form. Any request for changes should be made to the International and Mainland Students Office (International Students and Programs) at HKUST. 


  
7 Application Fee 
  7.1 The fee for on-line applications is HK$300, payable by Visa or MasterCard. 
  7.2 Application fees paid by cash or personal cheques will not be accepted. 
  7.3 The full application fee or proof of payment must be submitted together with the application form. 
  7.4 Application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. 
  
8 Submission of Supporting Documents 
  8.1 Supporting documents showing the results of examinations already taken must accompany the application form.  
  8.2 For applicants who have not completed their final exams or obtained their final exam results, it is to their advantage that they submit any interim transcripts showing the results of courses they have completed so far. The results of forthcoming examinations must be submitted as soon as they are available. 
  8.3 Applicants should ensure that the following documents in support of the application are submitted: 
  (a) Confidential Academic Reference Report 
  The report should be returned, in a sealed envelope, directly by the Principal/Academic Referee to HKUST. 
Applicants who have left school and cannot obtain a reference from their Principals or Academic Referees may leave the form blank. However, it is in the applicant's interest that an Academic Reference by the Principal or Academic Referee of the school of last attendance be submitted. 
 
  (b) Certified True Copies of Certificates/Transcripts 
  Supporting documents that prove all studies undertaken since Secondary Studies must be submitted. 
Applicants must submit officially certified true copies of certificates and complete transcripts; HKUST does not accept originals of these documents. 


Copies of original transcripts/certificates must be certified by the issuing authority concerned, or a school principal/academic referee, or a notary public. These copies should be officially chopped and signed. The name, status and position of the person certifying the copies must be clearly stated. 
Applicants should write their full names and application/reference number on all supporting documents. 
Documents which are not in English should be accompanied by a formally certified translation in English. 
If the policy of the applicant’s school is that transcripts should remain confidential, please request the institution to send it directly to HKUST. 
Applicants are advised not to send original documents by post. HKUST will not return materials submitted as part of the application, and will not be responsible for materials lost in the post. 
 
9 Authorized Representative 
  9.1 Applicants who wish to authorize someone else to handle their application must send an authorization letter, giving the personal particulars of their representative and a copy of his/her identity card/document. 
  
10 Admissions Interview 
  10.1 Invitation to attend face-to-face or telephone interviews are usually arranged by telephone or email, so applicants should ensure that HKUST has their correct contact information. 
  10.2 Not all applicants will be invited for interview, as admission offers can be made without the interview process.  
  10.3 Invitation to interview does not in any way imply an offer of admission. 
  
11 Admission Results 
  11.1 Applicants given an admission offer should confirm acceptance of the offer by payment of a non-refundable deposit before the date specified on the offer or the offer will be withdrawn automatically. The deposit is transferable to the tuition fee payment. 


  11.2 Admission offers are provisional subject to verification of information provided in the application. HKUST reserves the right to request applicants to present original documents for verification. 
  
12 Mature Applicants 
  12.1 Applicants aged 25 or above before the first day of the academic year in which admission is sought who do not satisfy HKUST's general and/or program entrance requirements may be considered for admission provided that they can demonstrate aptitude and suitability for admission to a particular program of study. 
  12.2 The mature applicant provision will be automatically invoked where appropriate; applicants need not opt for consideration as mature applicants. 
  12.3 Copies of the Birth Certificate or any document showing the date of birth should be attached together with the application form. 
  12.4 HKUST does not give preference to mature applicants; they will be considered on their individual merit. 
  
13 Applicants with Disabilities 
  13.1 Applicants with disabilities are not required to declare their disabilities at the application stage. This is to ensure that their applications will be considered by HKUST in the same manner as those from other applicants.  
  13.2 Applicants with disabilities should select programs with which they can physically cope. Applicants are encouraged to seek information on the suitability of certain study programs for someone with their disabilities and on facilities available for the disabled from the Student Affairs Office of HKUST. 
  
14 Double Registration 
  14.1 Students admitted to a full-time program of study at HKUST will be expected to study full-time for their degrees. They will not be permitted to register for another qualification at HKUST or at another tertiary institution without prior permission, in writing, from the Director of Admissions, Registration and Records.  


  14.2 Student enrolment lists will be compared with those of other tertiary institutions from time to time. Students found to be registered elsewhere will normally be required to discontinue their studies at HKUST.

  NOTES FOR COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FORM 
Unless noted below, instructions on completing the application form are stated on the application form. 
Part 1 : Personal Details 
Student Visa for studying at HKUST; Right of Abode and the Right to Land in Hong Kong SAR 
A non-local applicant, once admitted, must obtain a valid visa issued by the HKSAR Director of Immigration in order to enter Hong Kong SAR for education purposes, with the following exceptions: 
      i. The applicant has the Right of Abode in Hong Kong SAR; 
      ii. The applicant has the Right to Land in Hong Kong SAR; or 
     iii. The applicant can enter Hong Kong SAR holding a Dependant Visa. 
The Right of Abode and the Right to Land are indicated on the Hong Kong Identity Card under the date of birth with the symbols "A" and "R".

Part 2: Program Choices 
Applicants should check their admissions eligibility by examining the admission requirements for both the university and the specific program(s) for which they intend to apply. 


Applicants may enter on the application a maximum of three choices of programs placed in the order of their preference. Subsequent changes are not normally permitted. 
 
Parts 3 to 5: Education and Examinations 
Applicants are required to disclose full information on their education background since Secondary Studies. All public examinations taken and the corresponding results must be provided. Failure to do so will lead to disqualification of the application for admission or withdrawal of the admission offer, where appropriate. 
Please be as accurate as possible when completing this Part to ensure that the correct grades are entered. Incorrect grades will result in a distorted calculation of admissions scores, possibly reducing the chance of admission or leading to disqualification of the application. 
 
Credit Transfer 
Applicants from universities or other post-secondary institutions who have completed or are studying a curriculum relevant to the program(s) for which they are applying may apply for credit transfer upon admission. However, applicants for direct admission to the second year or later will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. 
Transfer credits may be granted to a student in recognition of studies completed successfully elsewhere according to prescribed procedures. Transfer credits from programs of other institutions attended by the student prior to admission to HKUST will only be granted if the study was properly disclosed in the student’s application for admission. 
Courses accepted for transfer must normally be at a level more advanced than studies for the advanced level (A-level) examinations and be taught by a recognized institution. 
The approval of the total number of credits to be transferred should be made with regard to the university policy that no student shall be permitted to graduate unless he/she has completed a minimum of one year of full-time study at HKUST and obtained a minimum of 35 HKUST credits; and that student is not considered for completion of a minor program unless at least two-thirds of the credits counting toward the minor program requirements are HKUST credits. 


Transfer credits granted will not be included in the calculation of grade averages. 
 
Part 6: English Language Proficiency 
Demonstration of English language proficiency in reading, writing and listening is required for admission to the University. This proficiency may be demonstrated by the submission of English language proficiency test scores acquired through a number of ways. Details are available at our website. 
Applicants that have already taken the TOEFL or the IELTS should request the issuing authority to send an official copy directly to the University. The University code for TOEFL is 0170-00, for College Board (i.e., SAT, AP) is 2787. Applicants that have English language tests forthcoming should let the University know of the forthcoming test date.
