请教一个长句子的翻译

我对这个课题重新提起兴趣是多亏了麦克芒将军和这个学社（是数学社或协会吗？）
麦克芒将军告诉我，哲学杂志中发现一张很旧的纸。这张纸记载了我跟凯雷教授的交流，我曾经对凯雷教授说我已经掌握了一种微妙的方式可以找到在正整数的任意数量的任意数量的变量的线性方程组的解的个数。
后面的数学语言肯定是不对的， 姑且滥竽充数。

（2） 说明一下：我不是大师，只是由于研究的需要才努力学习外语，因此，我还有很多不明白的地方需要学习。英语中的长句子历来都是我的短板，碰到J.J.Sylvester这样的喜欢说长句子的数学家就有些困难了。
（3） 为了减少朋友们的顾虑，我有意隐去the Council of the Mathematical Society of London，只说成the Council，这实际上就是“伦敦数学学会理事会”。
（4） MacMahon的全名为Percy Alexander MacMahon，Major可翻译为“ 少校”，Major MacMahon可翻译为“麦克马洪少校”； paper在这里是“论文”的意思； Philosophical Magazine是一份杂志，不翻译也行，翻译为“哲学杂志”也可以；the numberof solutions in positive integers of any number of linear equations in anynumber of variables可翻译为“对包含任意多个变量的线性方程，都可以确定其正整数解的数量”，kanicle的翻译也是可以的；
（5） 这里的to whom是不是指Major MacMahon？是谁在to whom and to the Council？I owe my renewed interest 如何翻译？早唔兰音在3楼的翻译似乎可以采用，只是这里的to whom and to the Council与Major MacMahon的关系我无法理解。
（6） sb.，informs me that sth.A I stated that I was in possession of sth.B，of sth.C 这个结构的句子应该如何理解？
（7） 作者在文章的序言是：In the published correspondence of Euler there is a note from him toGoldbach, or, the other way, from Goldbach to Euler, in which a very wonderful theorem is stated which has never been proved by Euler or any one else, which I hope I may be able to do by an entirely improved method that I have applied with perfect success to the problem of partitions and to the more general problem of demonstration, i. e. to determine the number of solutions in positive integers of any number of linear equations with any number of variables.
（8） J.J.Sylvester的这篇论文我找了好几年，这是最近才找到的，而且很不清楚。其实我还有几篇文章一直无法找到，倒是希望各位朋友帮忙。

然后撇开council 不谈， 只谈Major MacMahon

嗯，这样理解应该合理，不然就无法解释“Major MacMahon, to whom and to the Council of the Mathematical Society of London I owe my renewed interest in this subject,”的说法了。这也可以跟作者在文章的序言“which I hope I may beable to do by an entirely improved method that I have applied with perfect success to the problem of partitions and to the more general problem of demonstration,”相呼应。
“paper”在这里应该是“论文”的意思，当年的杂志有发表简报的做法，Sylvester的另一篇论文就有这个特征：

经过反复思考，我觉得可以采用早唔籣因的翻译；Kanicle的翻译也有可参考之处。
