PROLOGUE
Time to go, uh? Fionula said.
Ah, to the Distant Blue. Faolan answered silently in his mind, listening to the strong booming heart of Eo.
In the displaced Spirit Woods, the figures moved together past birch trees, the figures of gyre souls. There's not a leaf on the branches, yet the bark seems to glow. The eerie whiteness looming in the darkness of the night makes it almost as bright as day.
Fionula hovered as a verse of music unfurled from her throat:
The night is black.
The stars are bright.
The sea is dark and deep.

Someone I know is safe and snug.
They're drifting off to sleep.
Round and round,
a little boat no bigger than your hand,
out on the ocean,
far away from land.
Take the little sail down.
Light the little light.
This is the way to the garden in the night. ■
