      INTRODUCTION
There is SOMETHING ABOUT ANIMALS that speaks to the human soul,
and something magical about the attempt to "capture" that spirit and put it down on paper for posterity.
That elusive and intangible element is magnified a hundred-fold when the subject of such a drawing is a wild animals, that creature that lurks at the edges of our communities and our consciousness.

However, wild animals can be known, they can be drawn, and they even become familiar individuals, with stories and faces of their own,
if only we allow enough time to get to konw them.

It is not an easy process, but it is,I think,an immensely satisfying one,and every person's journey into their world is different.

In this book,I focus on the wildlife I know best——North American mammals.
Here you will find detailed information about most of the common mammal species of North American wildlife, including color markings, body shapes, and behavior.

While the focus of this book is on the structure and appearance of various animal species,
I believe that a knowledge of animal behavior is vital to understanding your subject and what makes it "tick,"
and therefore,to creating a convincing piece of animal art that goes beyond a mere construction of anatomy and into a semblance of life.

Despite the focus on North American species,I hope that this book will also be helpful to wildlife artists around the world.
Many species found in North America, such as the brown bear, gray wolf, read fox, elk(red deer),moose(elk),weasel(stoat),otter, and marten, are also found elsewhere as either the same or a very similar species.
There may be subtle differences from one continent to another, but the basics should be the same.
