While Sherlock Holmes is one of the most well-known names among all Earth dwellers,the name Jeremy Brett is as much famous among Holmes fans.Yet Brett was more than the most-welcomed interpreter of the great detective Holmes.(So how can I explain this idea......)

Jeremy Brett was(how I want to write'is') a talented British (how I want to write 'Brettish') actor who was born Peter Jeremy William Huggins and was the son of a Lieutenant.He was born on 11.3,1933.With his sparkling hazel eyes,little Huggins was said to be likely to become an actor in the future.It proved to be right when young Huggins chose to be a professional actor.But he was hurt by his father's strong objection.Finally he took his stage name from the label of his first suit---Brett,and started his career.

Brett was once faced with a difficulty that he could not pronounce words with 'r'properly.Through persistent exercise,he left no trace of his small problem of tongue.But no exercise could save him from the heart disease which prevented him from taking the role of James Bond.However ,we are fortunate enough that ,with remarkable resemblance to Audrey Hepburn, Brett was chosen to play the part of Hepburn's brother Nikolai in the film'War and Peace',which allows us to catch a glimpse of Brett's charm.

Several years later Brett and Hepburn again appeared in the same film,My fair Lady.This time Brett appeared as Freddie,a simple young gentleman in love with the 'fair lady'.The two roles,Nikolai and freddie,were both young,handsome,but simple and innocent,and could hardly be compared to those roles,such as Hamlet,that were wonderfully interpreted by Brett on stage.Critics spoke highly of his performance as Hamlet,despite the fact that he was said to be too good-looking for the role.As an talented actor Brett was growingly experienced in numerous Shakespeare plays,but I believe good looks can be a burden for any talented soul.

Brett's peak of career did not come until he finally took the role of Sherlock Holmes at the age of 50.What is interesting is that Brett once played Dr.Watson,the cool detective's loyal and mild froend.Actually,in terms of character,Brett was closer to Watson.However,his Holmes was brilliant.People were amazed by his performance--his looks brought him a curse that his talents were seldom emphasised.He made Holmes into a vidid character instead of a mere icon.Outside the Holmes play he was amiable and humorous,taking shots secrectly of those napping members of the crew and sticking his worksonto a wall,playing tricks on friends,holding a party for the crew in his house,and simling to his fans who were waiting for an autogragh.

Sometimes,fate takes no notice of one's success and kindness,and gives this noble soul a strike ina most cruel way.Brett's wife,Joan,was diagnosed eith cancer when her husband was busy shooting the Holmes series.On seeing Joan being treated in the hospital,Brett fainted away.Sadly,she passed away,which was a huge blow to Brett.This huge lost,adding to some earlier stress,eventually placed him in the depth of darkness--maniac depression.There were intense ups and downs of emotion,but he tried to fight against it.On Sept.3rd,1995,he made a speech in which he admitted his illness and encouraged other people suffering from it.

Now ,in Clapham Common,where Brett used to take a walk,stands a memorial tree planted in memory of this‘larger than life' soul.It is vibrant as much as his inspiring smiles and infectious laughs,which I,as well as his admirers from all over the world,will cherish forever.
