On Thursday afternoon, at least one suite at the Galt House was full of famous first-timers, excited to be attending our city’s global sporting and style spectacle. The group had been assembled by Todd Calvert, on behalf of Glasscock Boutique, sponsor of the weekend gala.
“It’s my first time at the Kentucky Derby,” said designer Christian Siriano. “I think it will be cool to see what people are wearing … to see women of every age, every body type wearing something they’d never wear any other day of the year. I mean, how often can you wear a big hat? ”
Christian, by the way, will not be wearing a hat himself: “No hat,” he said. “I can’t do a hat with the hair. It’s for the ladies. Let them have their day.”
When pressed for Derby fashion advice, he had this to say: “There should be no rules ... It’s great to see otherwise conservative women in an outrageous outfit. That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? It would be boring if everyone played it safe and wore the same thing. I’m really looking forward to seeing it all.”
“Glee” regular Max Adler, over in the corner eyeing a rack of Bill Blass samples for his en route girlfriend was just as enthusiastic about the weekend. “Going to the Derby is something I’ve wanted to do my whole life. When I got the call to be involved with The Julep and the James Graham Brown Cancer Center it seemed like a great opportunity. It’s also my girlfriend’s 30th birthday this weekend. She gets to wear a beautiful dress, a hat, I can take her to the Derby. What more can I ask for?”
In the next room, trying on Bill Blass dresses, was Linsey Godfrey (“The Bold and The Beautiful”). She chose a red dress, but everything she walked out in looked flawless. “I haven’t seen my hat yet,” she said. “But Todd asked me ‘How far are you willing to go? And I said, ‘I’ll go pretty crazy.’ ”
Adler also had ambitious fashion plans for the weekend. “I have a pink shirt and a gray suit. That works, right?” he asked. “And I have pink ties. I think I’ll wear pink ties with everything.”
Pink was definitely a recurring theme in the room where everyone present (including Godfrey’s boyfriend, actor Mark Hapka of “Days of Our Lives,” and Zachary Ty Bryan formerly of “Home Improvement”) seemed very focused on the cause that brought them into town.
“What I loved about the James Graham Brown Cancer Center is the scope of what they do,” said Adler. “It’s not just the equipment and the research. It’s communication and education and offering support to families.”
Siriano, who became involved in supporting the center through the Butterflies and Bling fundraiser sponsored by Glasscock Boutique last year, sees this weekend as a learning experience. “I did Butterflies and Bling last year, and this is the next step. I was glad to come down and offer my support … and I don’t know what else I can do yet. This weekend may give me more of a sense of that. It’s important to be able to do some good through designing clothes.”
