Salford Music Festival were certainly very honoured to present their headliner, the brilliant Molotov Jukebox. These guys appear very humble and their enormous connection with their audience serves to create a fantastic party atmosphere. Front woman Natalia Tena, grinding with the onstage pole, was certainly having as good a time as the audience were.
Tena’s nasal voice, with its Mediterranean feel and her expert musicianship over the accordion are revolutionary additions to a band of this calibre. Molotov Jukebox gave a first class, emotive performance, full of fun, attitude and energy, particularly in the song “What’s a Girl to Do.”
The band are themselves constantly grooving; it see***ike life is an eternal party for them – I can imagine songs such as “Double Dare” being played on a boat in the sun. This summer anthem sees Tena almost rapping some of the lyrics, allowing for a Caribbean and Mediterranean infusion.
“Voodoo” is another highlight, with its funky bass line and its building climax, but a beautiful contrast to the bluesy trumpet intro of “Don’t Panic” whose vocals climb from Tena with such a passion and force. Taking numerous but fantastical turns, this song eventually kicks in to a throbbing bass line with a celebratory accordion riff. Add to this the lyrics “You think you’re gonna take me but you’re never gonna take me alive” and you have the perfect recipe for the theme song to the lives of people everywhere. And that’s a good thing.
A truly stunning show – this band couldn’t fail to have everyone on their feet. If you love music, you’ll love Molotov Jukebox. FACT.
